This walnut kitchen island was meticulously restored to bring out its original warmth and character. The old finish, along with imperfections from water damage and burn marks, was carefully removed using a Festool sander paired with a 98% dust-extraction vacuum system – keeping the homeowner’s kitchen virtually dust-free throughout the process.
After achieving a smooth, clean surface, the island was finished with Rubio Monocoat, a zero-VOC, plant-based oil finish that enhances the natural grain while offering long-lasting protection. The result is a beautifully refreshed centerpiece that combines craftsmanship, sustainability, and respect for the living space.
A slab-style counter was restored by removing the existing epoxy and refinishing the surface with Rubio Monocoat to enhance the natural wood character. Waterfall cuts were added to ensure ADA compliance while maintaining the live edge aesthetic.
The front face features a decorative wallpaper finish, complemented by a custom handmade tile backsplash and a new sink installation. Finishing details include clean lines and durable Schluter trim for a polished, functional result.
These three custom-built benches—ranging in length from 10 to 14 feet—were crafted to meet local occupancy compliance requirements. Constructed from reclaimed materials sourced through local salvage partners, the lumber was carefully resawn, planed, jointed, and finished with linseed oil to enhance durability and showcase the natural grain.
The minimalist design was intentionally kept simple to blend seamlessly into the surrounding space, offering a natural, unobtrusive presence. This project represents a thoughtful intersection of modern design, adaptive reuse, and regulatory compliance.
